Global Risks Initiative

The Global Risks Initiative is the World Economic Forum’s principal platform to monitor critical global risks facing economies and societies, to support preparedness and resilience to the next global shock.

Enabling action through foresight

With ever-more complexity, uncertainty and fragmentation, global risk foresight is more valuable than ever for business leaders and policy-makers. The World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report, is the preeminent benchmark for global risks, sitting at the forefront of strategic decision-making for almost two decades.

From foresight to action

Launching at the 2024 Annual Meeting in Davos, the Global Risks Consortium will champion the Forum’s work across the Global Risks Initiative, translating risk foresight into proactive action. The aim of the initiative is to ensure that business and policy leaders worldwide make critical decisions based on the best information possible, with a clear understanding of potential futures and their implications.

The consortium will promote action in two key areas:

Enhancing the understanding and dissemination of risk foresight across multiple domains and timeframesSupporting proactive action on emerging best practices through national and industry dialogue

The consortium’s inaugural meeting will take place in January 2024 at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos.

Enhancing risk foresight

Timely and relevant risk insights are crucial in a complex and rapidly evolving global risk landscape. In 2024 the initiative’s risk foresight work will be centred around:

Publishing the Global Risks Report which tracks global risk perceptions amongst world leaders in business, government, and civil society across economic, environmental, geopolitical, societal, and technological risks over the short and long term. Launching the second iteration of a Chief Risk Officers Outlook series, providing a timely, mid-year perspective on the current and emerging risk landscape from on-the-ground risk practitioners.Bringing together experts through the Global Future Council on the Future of Complex Risks and uncovering new, interconnected, and emerging risks to provide valuable foresight on the risks of tomorrow.

Supporting action to address global risks

Leveraging the Forum’s network of leaders across government, the private sector, international organizations and civil society, in 2024 the initiative’s action-orientated activities will focus on:

Growing and diversifying the Chief Risk Officers Community, which explores ways organizations can be better prepared to anticipate, manage, and rebound faster from global shocks and their spillover effects..Explore the creation of a National Risk Officers Community that would exchange views on best practices and strengthen risk preparedness and resilience at national levels.Establish a draft blueprint for a Framework for Risk Preparedness informed by community-led insights from national risk officers.
