A new sustainable growth agenda for the G20
The Ocean 20 (O20), initiated by Indonesia in 2022 as part of their G20 presidency and with their long history of ocean stewardship, aims to deliver concrete actionable policy recommendations and strategies for cooperation, on priorities set by each rotating presidency, to spur investment and growth in the ocean economy while protecting, restoring and regenerating it. O20 provides a platform for the world’s leading global companies, G20 countries and civil society voices to make and realize commitments towards a sustainable, inclusive ocean –and to leverage market opportunities in the ocean economy. The O20 was launched at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in November 2022 as a proposed G20 Engagement Group.
The G20 represents 45% of the world’s coastline, 21% of its exclusive economic zones and 80% of global carbon emissions; it has an undeniably important role in protecting the marine ecosystems. Restoring theirvalue and ensuring long-term sustainability of the ocean economy represents a tremendous opportunity to address many of the priorities set out in the G20 agenda.
