The Pew Charitable Trusts, an independent, non-governmental organization, is the sole beneficiary of seven charitable funds established by the family of Sun Oil Company founder Joseph Pew. Pew is driven by the power of knowledge to solve today’s most challenging problems. Informed by the founders’ interest in research, knowledge and maintaining a robust democracy, its portfolio includes public opinion research; arts and culture; health and consumer policy; and environment initiatives. Since 1974, Pew has advanced protections for terrestrial and marine ecosystems worldwide. Its work spanning five continents and the global ocean encompasses scientific research, public education, coalition-building and advocacy.
