Established in September 2007, Spiber is a Japanese biotechnology start-up using cutting-edge synthetic biology, polymer and material science for the development of Brewed Protein, a novel protein-based material that can be used to create fibres, films, resins and more. It is produced through microbial fermentation and using agricultural feedstocks as the primary raw material. It is effective for animal-free and plastic-free initiatives in fields such as the apparel and automotive industries. Spiber has raised ¥35.4 billion ($330 million) as of Oct 2020 and is engaged in the construction of its first overseas plant.
