Author of “Strangers in Their Own Land, Anger and Mourning on the American Right”, a finalist for the National Book Award. Other books include “The Second Shift: working parents and the revolution at home”, “The Time Bind: when home becomes work and work becomes home”, and “The Managed Heart”. Recipient, Guggenheim, Mellon and Fulbright Awards; Ulysses Medal, University College, Dublin. Four books have been named as New York Times “Notable Non-fiction Book of the Year”; a play and musical have been based on two; work appears in 17 languages.
