1985-95, extensive field research on giant panda; three years as post-doctoral Fellow of Conservation Genetics, National Institute of Health, US; 1995-2000, Programme Officer, WWF China, in charge of species and protected areas programme; 2002, with Conservation International (CI); Director and Chief Scientist, ShanShui Conservation Centre, a local NGO affiliated to CI. Adjunct professorship in School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, Yale University. Chair, IUCN Species Survival Council Panda Expert Group. Executive Committee Member, China Associate for Science and Technology. Author or Co-Author, several books on conservation in China, including The Giant Panda in the Wild, Saving an Endangered Species.
