Luis Plata is the founder and CEO of the Cornerstone Group, the largest private equity fund in Colombia. Until 2010 he was Colombia’s Minister of Trade, Industry and Tourism. During his tenure, Colombia had the highest growth in exports, direct foreign investment and tourism in its history, through the implementation of policies that transformed the country’s manufacturing base and business climate. Prior to his appointment as Minister, Plata successfully served as CEO of Proexport, Colombia’s trade, investment, and tourism promotion entity, transforming into one of the most innovative promotion organizations, receiving a World Bank award in 2005. Plata began his career in Asia, as Colombian Trade Commissioner, in Tokyo, Taipei and Hong Kong, spending a total of 5 years in the region. A graduate of Harvard Business School and The University of Arizona, he also has extensive experience in the private sector, first as a consultant with McKinsey & Co, and later as an entrepreneur in Silicon Valley. He is a member of the Young Global Leaders of the World Economic Forum, and was recognized with the highest award given by the Young Presidents Organization, the YPO Legacy Award. He has received of the Congressional Order of Merit of Colombia on two separate occasions. Plata served with honors in the Colombian Army.
