PhD, University of Warwick. 1993-7, Director and Professor, Graduate School of Public and Development Management, University of the Witwatersrand; 1998-2003, Executive Director of the Spier Group of Companies; since 2003, Professor of Sustainable Development in the School of Public Leadership, Stellenbosch University, and Distinguished Professor and Co-Director of the Centre for Complex Systems in Transition since 2015 at Stellenbosch University. Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Development Bank of Southern Africa; member of the International Resource Panel (convened by UN Environment) since 2007; Edward P. Bass Distinguished Environmental Scholar for 2018, Yale University, USA; Visiting Professor at Universities of Sheffield and Utrecht. Aspen Institute Faculty Pioneer Award for best contribution to sustainability in leadership education, 2010. Co-author with Eve Annecke of Just Transitions: Explorations of Sustainability in an Unfair World; next book is The Sustainability Age: Just Transitions in a Complex World (2019)
