Mathias Döpfner

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Axel Springer

Mathias Döpfner is Chairman and CEO of the media and technology company Axel Springer in Berlin. In 1998, he joined the company as Editor-in-Chief of Die Welt. In 2000, he became a member of the executive board and was appointed CEO in 2002. Since then, Axel Springer has consequently focused on digitization, fostering a fundamental transformation. Revenues from digital activities increased from €117m to €2.5 bn, making Axel Springer the European market leader in content and classifieds. Mathias Döpfner is member of the boards of Netflix and Warner Music Group. In 2016, he became President of the Federation of German Newspaper Publishers. He holds honorary offices at, among others, the American Academy, the American Jewish Committee, and the European Publishers Council. In 2010, he was visiting professor in media at the University of Cambridge and became a member of St. John’s College. He studied Musicology, German, and Theatrical Arts in Frankfurt and Boston.
