Former Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies (1997-99, 1999-2001 and 2009-10). 31 August 2016, took office as President of the Republic after the Senate approved the proceeding to impeach and remove President Dilma Rousseff from the presidency. Was acting President for 111 days during the period Rousseff was suspended pending the result of the impeachment proceeding. With the confirmation of Rousseff's impeachment by the Senate, holds office as President until 31 December 2018. On leave from the presidency of the national PMDB (Brazilian Democratic Movement Party), after being elected in 2001 and re-elected in 2004, 2007, 2010 and 2013.
