Formerly: Head, UN Development Fund for Women: assisted over 100 countries to formulate and implement legislation and policies to realize women's security and rights; played critical role in addressing violence against women and Security Council's adoption of resolution on women, peace and security; undertook extensive missions to conflict-affected countries worldwide; since 2007, Executive Secretary, United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), at Undersecretary-General level and first woman to occupy it. Nominee for 2005 Nobel Peace Prize. Recipient of awards including: UNA-Harvard Leadership Award, Woman of Distinction Award, UN-NGO Committee on Status of Women; Women Who Make a Difference, National Council for Research on Women (2005); Dag Hammarskjöld Medal (2004).
