The Consumers & Climate Change initiative convenes leaders from consumer-centric businesses and leading experts committed to advancing climate-friendly consumption behaviors and consumer advocacy for a climate-friendly future. Global warming is negatively effecting communities, consumers’ health, and our natural ecosystems. Increasingly, consumers are worried about these impacts, but uncertain about what actions to take.
Climate change presents a complex collective action problem that many consumers have difficulty understanding, caring for or acting on. This raises important questions about how this topic is positioned and communicated to consumers by influential consumer-facing organizations, including leading consumer brands.
Stakeholders increasingly recognize the growing need to innovate how we touch and engage consumers on the issue of climate change. The Potential Energy Coalition (PEC) is developing a robust foundation of research on consumer attitudes towards climate change that can help enable more effective engagement outcomes. At the same time, many consumer brands count on a growing wealth of consumer insight and an extensive consumer base spanning the globe to implement innovative campaigns on the ground. Building on these strengths, the Consumer Industries and other consumer-oriented businesses have the opportunity to advance the translation of key learnings and insights into a diversity of regional and global campaigns. This would allow for both a dissemination of learnings across different markets, as well as a connected network or campaigners that can jointly evaluate impact and explore diverse regional and local applications.
PEC and the Forum’s Future of Consumption platform will lead a collaborative effort to achieve the following in 2020/21:
- Build a support network for PEC’s evidence-based methodology and structured insight sharing across organisations
- Champion best practices of innovative approaches across organizations to engage and mobilize consumers
- Collaborate on translating shared insights and best practices into impactful consumer-facing campaigns
