Science-Based Targets for the Global Environment Commons

Science-based targets can give direction and create incentives for key actors across the world to operate within planetary boundaries. Over the past three years, momentum has been building for companies to establish targets to reduce GHG emissions in line with the level of reductions that the scientific community agrees is required to limit the risk of catastrophic climate change. The project on Science-Based Targets for the Global Environment Commons aims to continue building on this momentum to create a broader movement that will extend specific science-based target approaches from climate change to water, land, and other issues. An “Earth Targets Platform” has been conceptualized to help guide the expansion of science-based targets to these other areas, and to complement this process by engaging private sector and other key actors to develop specific and appropriate targets at the company and sector level across all relevant planetary boundaries.
