Global trade is transforming – but are the regulations keeping step with these changes? As emerging technologies promise faster, more inclusive and secure cross-border commerce, innovation often outpaces regulation, creating a critical gap.

To address these challenges, the UAE TradeTech Regulatory Sandbox – a joint initiative by the World Economic Forum, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Trade and the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development – brought together eight global start-ups and four UAE regulators. In this controlled environment, frontier solutions were rigorously tested – from secure digital trade documentation and self-sovereign identity to stablecoin payments and DeFi lending – and the experiment illuminated both the immense possibilities of digital transformation as well as the policy adaptations needed for mass adoption.

A practical roadmap for governments, regulators and innovators shaping the next era of resilient, inclusive global commerce, Advancing Digital Trade: Insights from the UAE TradeTech Sandbox distils the key learnings and policy recommendations arising from this landmark initiative.
