Today, 2.2 billion people lack access to safe drinking water, while 700 million could be forced to relocate due to water shortages by 2030. Agriculture consumes over 70% of global freshwater – and many agricultural systems still rely on inefficient irrigation methods and water practices. This report explores how digital technologies can advance agricultural water management.

Drawing on the insights of industry leaders, academia and members of the World Economic Forum’s Tech for Climate Adaptation initiative, Water Futures Community and Food Innovation Hubs, the report showcases how advanced technologies such as AI, internet of things (IoT) and remote sensing can monitor water availability, optimize irrigation, guide crop selection and help harvest rainwater. Without digital transformation, agriculture risks falling behind in addressing climate-induced water shortages.

By the conclusion of this report, policy-makers, business leaders and water management practitioners will be equipped with actionable recommendations to increase water efficiency, reduce waste and enhance sustainability, driving long-term water security for future generations.
