‘Fire clouds’ could be aggravating Europe’s wildfires. What are they?

As France and Spain battle terrifying wildfires, experts believe they’ve spotted a phenomenon new to the region: fire clouds. These occur when a wildfire is so large and severe it generates its own weather system, including thunderstorms, which can spread the fire with gusts of wind and even ignite new areas with lightning strikes.
