In Kenya, This Women-only Village Provides A Refuge From Violence

It was founded by local matriarch Rebecca Lolosoli 30 years ago in Kenya’s Rift Valley. She spoke out about the violence against the women in her community but her words were met with rage. So she and 16 other women broke away to found Umoja "I am very proud to live in this village because now there is no one stressing me, and my husband can't assault me here. I live as a mother, with children, who is fighting for rights against early marriages and female genital mutilation."
