Scientists have made an alarming discovery: the ‘photic’ zone, where light penetrates the water and where 90% of sea creatures live, has shrunk across a fifth of the ocean in 20 years. In some places, it’s declined by half.
This could have grave impacts on the food chain and the climate. The photic zone is home to phytoplankton, which absorbs huge portions of human CO2 emissions and generates half the planet’s oxygen - while underpinning a web of life that ultimately supports global fish stocks, and us.
