Tokyo is tunnelling to beat the effects of climate change

Deep below the city, a machine is digging a new 4.5km tunnel. It will capture vast amounts of rainfall, diverting it to an enormous underground reservoir before it can flood the city. Japan’s capital already sits atop a network of drainage tunnels and storage cisterns. But climate change is fuelling a rise in extreme rainfall over Tokyo.
