Shaping the Future of Technology Governance: IoT, Robotics and Smart Cities

Watch the overview

Partnering with leading decision-makers and experts from across industries, regions and sectors to collectively shape a future world that is healthy, resilient, agile and equitable using IoT.

Instability and disruption appear to be the new normal for industries and governments around the world. The internet of things (IoT) holds the power to bring situational awareness to help us better understand, adapt and thrive in an unpredictable world.

IoT is the internet-connected device that enables an employee work from home, the remote-controlled robot manufacturing car parts, the traffic light sensor optimizing the ambulance route.

IoT keeps us healthy, safe and connected. It can accelerate social mobility, minimize air pollution, and increase business efficiency. It enables agility and long-term resilience. It can also cause serious harm if it is not harnessed and disseminated in a responsible way.

There are already more IoT devices than people in the world. By 2025, it is expected that 41.6 billion IoT devices will be constantly capturing data on how we live, work, move through our cities, and operate and maintain the machines on which we depend.

Together with our partners, we are shaping the development, use and impact of the internet of things for the benefit of all society. Over the last year, this work has come to life through new initiatives with the Government of Brazil to assist small businesses and advance social mobility, collaboration with the G20 to improve city services, and partnerships with wearables companies to help manage and avert the spread of COVID-19.

The ability of governments, businesses and societies to adapt quickly to changing conditions is no longer just a strategic advantage: it is essential for sustained progress and harm reduction. In the new, unpredictable world, the internet of things gives us the real-time awareness we need to adapt and thrive. Together with our partners, we are committed to taking on the greatest opportunities and challenges this crisis brings – bridging the digital divide, managing epidemics, stopping climate change and building trust.
