Fishing nets can take decades to break down - and when they’re lost at sea, they can entangle marine life and damage ocean habitats. Bureo collects discarded nets from around the world, then recycles them into nylon yarn for waterproof jackets, hats and sportswear. Since 2013, the start-up has collected 7.7 million kilos of fishing nets - helping turn a major ocean problem into a source of new materials. Bureo is supported by members of the 1000 Ocean Startups Coalition, which is committed to scaling at least 1,000 transformative solutions by 2030.
