What is the UN High Seas Treaty, and How Will it Work?

The High Seas Treaty will help place 30% of the world's oceans under protection by 2030. Protecting biodiversity in international waters and establishing more sustainable and equitable management of the ocean. Experts say it is a milestone in efforts to protect marine life. Almost 10% of marine species are at risk of extinction, and the entire ocean is under threat from overfishing, pollution, warming, and acidification. The High Seas Treaty will include regulation of industrial fishing and shipping routes on the high seas as well as a very cautious approach to the potential exploration of resources such as deep sea minerals.
