These Ukrainian Soldiers Received Bionic Arms
The Hero Arm is a new state-of-the-art prosthetic made with a 3D printer. Inside this bionic arm are 2 ‘myoelectric’ sensors which connect to muscles in the user’s arm, allowing them to open and close the hand just by thinking about it. Each Hero Arm is custom-made for its user with detachable covers for a change of style. UK-based Open Bionics partnered with the Ukrainian charity Superhumans to create Hero Arms for veterans Andrii Gidzun and Vitalii Ivashchuk. Both Ukrainian soldiers suffered mine-explosion injuries while defending their country against Russia, resulting in traumatic hand amputations. Superhumans Ukraine is building a new hospital in Lviv that aims to serve thousands of soldiers and civilians when it opens in April 2023, offering prosthetics, rehabilitation and counselling. As well as their functional use, it’s hoped Hero Arms can reduce the mental health impact of new limb differences. Watch the video to learn more.
