Trailblazing ballerina Misty Copeland on how dance changed her life

In 2015, Misty Copeland became the first-ever Black principal ballerina at American Theatre Ballet. It was the culmination of a journey that began in challenging circumstances. As a child, Copeland often didn’t know where her family would be staying or where the next meal was coming from. But when a ballet teacher reached out, copeland found the stability that she lacked at home.
