These whales vanished from Argentina’s coast 100 years ago. Now they’re back.

Sei whales have been spotted in the ocean near Patagonia a century after huge numbers were killed by whale hunters. Biologists have called this a ‘conservation success on a global scale’. Their recovery is a testament to international efforts to protect nature. A global ban on commercial whaling came into force in 1982. The sei whale population has grown steadily ever since, culminating in the recent sightings in the South Atlantic.
