While German Chancellor Angela Merkel – a Davos veteran – had to cancel her participation in this year’s event, Joachim Gauck, the country’s president, made an appearance. In a special address, he drew on Europe’s ongoing refugee crisis. “It is our humanitarian responsibility to take in victims of persecution,” he told participants.
