Mohamed Afzal Norat

Senior Financial Sector Expert, International Monetary Fund

Mohamed Afzal Norat is a Senior Financial Sector Expert and Senior Economist in the Financial Supervision and Regulation Division in Monetary and Capital Markets Department of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He has worked on the Greece Program (2011-2012) on the stress test for the banking system. He also undertook stress testing work on the Malaysian FSAP (2012-2013). His other assignments at the IMF have included work on the UK (2012-2014), Colombia (2014-Present). He represents the IMF on the Core Principles and Islamic Finance Regulation working group of the Islamic Financial Services Board. He has worked on various analytical areas including the Vulnerability and Early Warning Exercise for the IMFC and in financial topic areas of: bank and nonbank analysis, derivatives, high-frequency and Islamic finance. He was a former Assistant Professor of Economics, Econometrics and Mathematical Economics, Leeds University, Fast Stream Statistician at the Office for National Statistics, Visiting Fellow at the US Census Bureau and Quant, Dealer and Advisor at the Bank of England. He has published in various scholarly journals and was a former fellow of the Royal Statistical Society.
