1971, BSc in Zoology and Botany, University of Zululand; 1978, MBChB, University of Bristol; 1986, postgraduate diploma in Tropical Child Health, School of Tropical Medicine, University of Liverpool. Extensive experience on African Union matters. Formerly with the Organisation for the African Unity (OAU) collective; participated in a number of OAU delegations as a midwife to peace, stability, development and prosperity to the African continent; also led a number of peace and security initiatives to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Union of the Comoros, the Kingdom of Lesotho, and others. 1994-99, Minister of Health; 1999-2009, Minister of Foreign Affairs; since 2009, Minister of Home Affairs. Concurrently, Chairperson, African Union Commission. Former: President, UN World Conference against Racism (WCAR); Chairperson, AU Ministers' Council; President, Minister's Council, UN World Summit on Sustainable Development; numerous others. Member: National Executive Committee, National Working Committee, and Women's League National Executive Committee, African National Congress (NWC); Socialist International Commission on Climate Change.
