Started political career in 1980: Assistant Secretary, Federation of South African Women (Fedsaw), Federation of Transvaal. 1981, Member, Anti-Republic Campaign Committee. 1982, Member, Release Mandela Campaign Committee. 1984-85, Organizer and Administrator, Amalgamated Black Workers Project; Representative, Industrial Council and National Women Coordinator, Transport and General Workers Union (T&GWU); former Member, Cosatu National Women Sub-committee; Member, ANC and ANC Steering Committee. Since 1994, Member of Parliament. 1995, Vice-Chairperson and since 1995, Member of the Management Committee, National Labour and Development Institute; Adviser to the September Commission. 1996, Deputy Minister of Mineral and Energy Affairs of South Africa.
