Scientists have discovered ‘dark oxygen’ in the ocean depths

Scientists were examining the Pacific Ocean bed when they made a startling discovery. Usually, studies of the deep sea show oxygen being consumed but in a 4km-deep stretch near Mexico, oxygen is being generated instead. It could challenge theories about how life on Earth began and cast doubt on the safety of deep-sea mining.
