China's industrial transformation and its lessons for the world
China's industrial transformation illustrates the transition pathways for China and offers lessons for the world through five industrial cluster examples.
Jörgen Sandström is the Head of the Transforming Industrial Ecosystem Program, at the World Economic Forum.
He leads several teams who work in the forefront of industrial transformation, energy transition, sustainability and decarbonisation.
These CEO-led initiatives intend to deliver net-zero materials ecosystems; unlock the technologies, finance and policies that will enable them; and design new sustainable business models towards their future performance.
Current initiatives:
• Transitioning Industrial Clusters initiative: accelerate the transition of clusters through a structured approach to financing, policy, technology and partnerships.
• Securing Minerals for the Energy Transition: Promotes collaboration and innovation to ensure the availability of sustainable and affordable minerals, thereby accelerating the energy transition.
• Modernising (Industrial) Energy Consumption, energy efficiency, electrification, digitalisation and grid planning, scaling-up clean power infrastructure for industrial transformation.
His teams are also supporting:
• First Movers Coalition (downstream): establishing demand commitments, drive procurement innovation and scaling-up breakthrough technologies (Steel, Aluminium, Chemicals, Concrete, Shipping, Aviation and Trucking sectors).
Jörgen is the former Head of Mining and Metals Industry at the World Economic Forum. The World Economic Forum’s Mining & Metals Industry community consists of the world’s leading mining and metals companies, representing a broad range of commodities and all regions.
Jörgen has twenty years of experience working with energy and commodities as well as in diplomacy.
From 2008 to 2016 he was Executive Officer of Addax Bioenergy SA, building up a renewable energy division and leading a large scale bioenergy venture in Sierra Leone, West Africa.
He started his career with the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs with postings in Russia, Switzerland, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Estonia.

By collaborating on green power procurement and clean power development, policy-makers and businesses are aiming to decarbonize China's industrial sectors.
Critical minerals are fuelling the energy transition. The industry must innovate to help make these materials more available, sustainable and affordable.
Digital twins are an emerging technology that could fundamentally alter how industrial ecosystems manage data, improve productivity and cut energy usage.
Embracing a multi-fuel future needs more than just new energy sources – it needs resilient digital and physical infrastructure. Developing a networked infrastructure of port-anchored indu...
Green hydrogen can help India’s energy security needs while tackling emissions. A new report highlights how to accelerate green hydrogen adoption in India.
The World Economic Forum Clean Hydrogen Project Accelerator has found that there are three key ways that clean hydrogen projects can be bought to fruition.
Cement releases a vast amount of emissions. Circularity could help solve this problem by keeping emissions to a minimum while enabling the construction of homes and infrastructure.
A new report profiles six countries taking action to reduce the enormous environmental impact of public procurement of low carbon concrete – but it requires us to go much further
Using decarbonization technology in the aluminium sector could reduce carbon emissions from aluminium processing in China by 65% over the next 40 years.
A decarbonized energy system requires both electrification and low carbon fuels. Accelerated action can boost public and private efforts and investment in clean hydrogen.
