This is what we need to prioritise to prevent another pandemic
COVID-19 has laid bare unequal access to water and sanitation around the world. Both are essential to combat this virus - and to prevent a future pandemic.
Abishek S Narayan is a researcher on Water and Sanitation for development and humanitarian aid. He is currently managing innovative urban water research projects in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, at the Swiss Federal Institute for Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag). He is also a consultant to the World Bank's Water Global Program.
He received his PhD at ETH Zurich on planning inclusive and sustainable urban sanitation in the Global South. He has a background in Engineering and Policy from Anna and Oxford Universities. His interests in water came from founding the Clean Adyar Initiative, a citizen action group for restoring a river in Chennai, India. He is a visiting lecturer at IHE Delft, EPF Lausanne and TU Berlin. His experience includes the World Bank and 100RC-Rockefeller Foundation.
Abishek is a recipient of the Commonwealth Scholarship and Green Talents award among others. He is on the core group and boards of global WASH networks such as the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance, and the Swiss Water Partnership, where he coordinates youth activities. His expertise on WASH is recognized by the UN and IWA and has been invited on their expert groups.
Abishek is also a Global Shaper at the World Economic Forum's Zurich Hub.
