A globally recognized scientist, entrepreneur, and thought leader in sustainable chemistry, energy, and advanced materials. Javier García-Martínez is Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Alicante and founder of Rive Technology, an MIT spin-off that developed and commercialized nanostructured zeolite catalysts to make major industrial processes more energy- and resource-efficient. The technology is now deployed worldwide following the company’s acquisition by W. R. Grace.
With extensive experience at the intersection of science, innovation, and policy, Javier has advised governments, international organizations, and companies on the energy transition, emerging technologies, and the future of science. He served as President of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), where he led major reforms and initiatives in sustainability, responsible chemistry, education, digitalization, and the engagement of young scientists.
A former World Economic Forum Young Global Leader, he has contributed to the Forum’s Top 10 Emerging Technologies initiative since 2014. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University, and a Fellow of the International Science Council. He also founded Celera, a talent accelerator supporting outstanding young people and scientific entrepreneurs.
Javier combines frontier research with entrepreneurship and international scientific leadership. His work has resulted in numerous patents, scientific publications, industrial technologies, and major international awards, with a consistent focus on using science and innovation to address global challenges and create positive societal impact.
