Bachelor's and MD, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa; studies in Mathematics, Logic and Philosophy, and Rhodes Scholar, Balliol College, University of Oxford; PhD in Mathematics, University of Chicago. 2011, joined the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; currently, President, Global Health Program; leads efforts in research and development of health solutions including vaccines, drugs and diagnostics, focusing on health problems that have a major impact in developing countries but get too little attention and funding; oversees the Global Health Program's work, which harnesses innovations in science and technology to fight diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
