MNT-Halan was founded in 2018 by CEO Mounir Nakhla and CTO Ahmed Mohsen who recognized the social and economic value of bringing financial services to the unbanked and underserved market. The pair developed Neuron – the first and only proprietary core banking software in the Middle East and Africa – and soon launched the Halan superapp. By combining technology-driven solutions with local market expertise, the company has continued to deepen its impact and expand its product offerings globally. In 2023, the company issued the Halan Card, further addressing an unmet need in the country’s financial landscape in which only 2.5 million credit cards were in use at the time. Since then, the company has issued over one million cards to Egyptian customers, significantly expanding access to credit in the country.
The scalability and replicability of MNT-Halan’s business model, together with the financial backing of global investors that include the IFC, are fueling international expansion to new markets where the company continues to innovate, invest, and build a stronger, more resilient financial ecosystem. In 2024, as a result of its success in Egypt, MNT-Halan expanded into Turkey, Pakistan, and the UAE, establishing itself as a regional leader in financial services. The company is now leveraging AI in its credit scoring models to further enhance its financial ecosystem and expand financial access for millions.
