Arthur Peter Mutharika

Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika is the President of the Republic of Malawi having won his second term after the May 21 2019 Tripartite Elections. His Excellency Prof. Mutharika is an educator and lawyer. Born on 18th July, 1940 in the tea growing district of Thyolo in southern Malawi, Prof. Mutharika did his primary school in different schools including Mulanje Mission before proceeding to Dedza Secondary School with other notable Malawian Politicians like Late Chakufwa Chihana.

Mutharika received his law degree from the University of London in 1965. He later in 1966 received his LL.M degree and in 1969 received JSD degree from Yale University. As a professor, he has taught at University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Haile Selassie University (Ethiopia), Rutgers University (USA), the United Nations Institute for Training and Research Program for Foreign Service Officers from Africa and Asia at Makerere University (Uganda), and Washington State University (USA). He has also served as an Academic Visitor at the London School of Economics (UK).He also served as advisor to the American Bar Association's Rule of Law initiative for Africa as well as being the Chairperson of the Institute for Democracy and Policy Studies.

President Mutharika also informally served as an adviser on issues of foreign and domestic policy to his older brother, Late President Bingu wa Mutharika, from 2004 until the President's death on 5 April 2012. His Excellency Prof Mutharika has also served as Minister of Justice and later as Minister for Education, Science and Technology. He also served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2011 to 2012. He is also currently President of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). He was Member of Parliament for Thyolo East from 2009 to March, 2014.

The Charles Nagel Professor of International comparative Law and 2008 International Jurist Award winner, His Excellency Prof. Mutharika was also previously appointed to the panel of arbitrators in the land dispute case in Zimbabwe until August 2011.
