Ben Smith

Director, Energy, Cities and Climate Change, Arup Group

Ben is an award-winning environmental consultant with a track record of winning and delivering consultancy projects for public and private sector clients in the UK, Europe and Australia, over the last 20 years. For the last decade Ben’s clients have predominantly been local and city government administrations. He has led work in over twenty global cities, focussed on energy efficiency, low carbon and renewable energy feasibility, sustainable waste management, climate change adaptation, urban resilience, smart technology and environmental and sustainability strategy.

Ben acted as a strategy partner to 100 Resilient Cities over six years, supporting the development of urban resilience strategies in several cities and is a co-author of the UNISDR Disaster Resilience Scorecard for Cities that has now been used in more than 100 cities.

Ben is the partnership director for Arup’s long-standing partnership with C40 Cities and has led several projects with them, including research on consumption-based emissions and guidance on Net Zero Districts. He is our director for our cities focussed work with WWF. He was a global judge for the 2019 Climathon, and for WWF’s One Planet Cities Challenge and sits on the UKRI Climate Resilience Steering Group. Ben is also a volunteer Founding Trustee of the National Park City Foundation and actively supported a six year campaign to declare London as the World’s first National Park City.
