PhD in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Washington University in St. Louis. Pioneering researcher in transgenic plants. 1987, Associate Professor, Peking University; 1988, Professor. Founded the School of Life Sciences, served as Department Chairman, Dean in the school; 1996, Vice-President, Peking University. 2002, President, China Agricultural University. 2007, Vice-Governor of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (Province), in charge of agriculture, rural development, poverty alleviation as well as science and technology in the province with 51 million populations in southern China. June 2013, appointed Vice-President and Executive Secretary, China Association for Science and Technology, the largest science and technology community organization in China. Established and was President of several biotechnology companies, including Sinovac Biotech, a NASDAQ listed company. Member, China’s Food Safety 30 Forum; actively involved in issues concerning food safety, transgenic plants and GMOs.
