Formerly: champion of several civil and human rights campaigns including: battle against world hunger; rejection of civil nuclear energy programme in Italy; adoption of Rome Statute in 1998 establishing permanent International Criminal Court; adoption of UN Resolution in 2007 for universal moratorium against death penalty; women's rights from integration in political life, promotion of female entrepreneurship and protection of human and civil rights, including campaigning against female genital mutilation. Vice-Chairman, Italian Senate. Founding Member, No Peace without Justice. Recipient of several international awards. in recognition of commitment to democracy, human rights and rule of law.
