1993, elected Professor of Particle Physics, ETH Zurich, Switzerland; 1997-2007, Director, Institute for Particle Physics, ETH Zurich; since January 2009, in charge of International Relations, CERN. Research activities concentrate on particle and astroparticle physics, addressing fundamental open questions about the structure of the universe and the underlying mechanisms that govern its evolution. Member, German Academy of Science Leopoldina. Has published close to 700 scientific papers and given more than 360 talks. Recipient of awards: Grand Decoration of Honour, Federal Province of Styria, Austria; Cross of Honour for Science and Art, First Class, Republic of Austria; Erna Hamburger prize, EPFL-WISH foundation.
