I aim to redesign crops for our changing future. This includes the global shift to a bio-based economy, which relies on carbon fixed by plants as a feedstock. To be able to predictably design new crops requires deep understanding about how plants work (genetics, metabolism), and how the system changes in response to the environment. In particular, we are looking at plant polysaccharides, where most of the fixed carbon is stored. Interests include lignocellulosic biofuels, bioproducts, closed environment agriculture/vertical farming, spaceag/spacehort, and synthetic biology.
