Marco Dunand is a Swiss entrepreneur and investor with more than four decades of experience in global energy and commodities markets. He co-founded Mercuria in 2004 and has built it into one of the top three global independent commodities companies, with operations spanning more than 50 countries in every major region of the world.

He has overseen Mercuria’s expansion into all key energy markets across traditional energy, power, carbon, metals and most recently into critical minerals. He has established the company as a key trading and strategic partner to governments, national resource companies and multinational organizations engaged in global trade, commodities and investment.

Demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and market innovation, he founded Silvania in 2023. Silvania is a nature-based investment platform, operating across 5 continents, which is focused on creating an investable asset class for the restoration and protection of nature. It combines leading science, cutting-edge technology and business solutions to scale ecological restoration and protection.

In 2021, he created the Villars Institute, a non-profit foundation, which convenes scientists, policymakers, business leaders, and future generations to educate and develop solutions to key global economic and environmental challenges. He joined the ‘Giving Pledge’ in 2024 focussing on addressing the critical global challenges of biodiversity loss and climate change.

To drive action and mainstream awareness of these issues, he has supported Sir David Attenborough and his film team across several projects: an Immersive Experience, ‘Our Story’ at London’s Natural History museum; ‘How to Live on Earth’ a feature documentary presented by Benedict Cumberbatch; and ‘Return of the Whales’ with Sylvia Earle.

Prior to founding Mercuria, he held senior roles at Goldman Sachs, served as Head of Citigroup’s Global Energy Desk, established Sempra’s energy and commodity business and held various roles at Cargill. He graduated in Economics and Management from the University of Geneva.
