Mario Marcel is an Economist from the University of Chile and holds a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Economics from the University of Cambridge, UK.
In 2015, he was appointed a Board Member of the Central Bank of Chile. The following year, he became its President, a role he held until January 2022.
Previously, Marcel served as Director of the Global Good Governance Practice at the World Bank, Deputy Director of Public Governance and Territorial Development at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and Manager of the Institutional Capacity and Finance Department at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
For 13 years, he worked for the Chilean Ministry of Finance, where he notably served as Director of the Budget Office from 2000 to 2006. Additionally, he was a researcher at the Corporation for Latin American Studies (CIEPLAN).
Minister Marcel has been actively involved in academia, engaging in teaching and research activities at universities in Chile and the United Kingdom. He has also worked as a consultant for international organizations and governments in countries such as Mexico, Colombia, Peru, and Vietnam.
An accomplished author, Marcel has published extensively on topics including macroeconomics, public finance, monetary policy, governance and public management, social policies, and social security.
