Rob Shuter (52) was appointed as Group President and CEO of MTN in March 2017. Rob has extensive experience in the telecoms sector in Africa and Europe as well as in retail and investment banking.
Before joining MTN Rob was based in Amsterdam as CEO of Vodafone Europe responsible for Vodafone’s operations in nine European markets. Rob’s career in the telecoms sector also included five years as the CEO of Vodafone Netherlands and three years in South Africa as the Group CFO of Vodacom Group.
After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant with Deloitte Rob spent seventeen years in banking including serving as Managing Director responsible for Retail Banking at Nedbank and Head of Investment Banking at Standard Bank.
Rob serves as a Commissioner on the United Nations Broadband Commission for sustainable development as well as the South African Presidential Commission on the Fourth Industrial Revolution where he chairs the Social and Economic impact workstream.
Rob is passionate about the role the mobile industry can play in driving digital and financial inclusion. He is a strong believer in the importance of corporate culture and presented an MBA elective course on Strategy, Execution and Culture at GIBS business school. Rob is a previous recipient of the CRF South Africa manager of the year award.
Rob lives in Johannesburg and is married with three children and his hobbies include triathlon, hiking and music.
