Steve Suryadinata

Chairman, Mata Investments

Steve is the Founder of Mata Investments, a diversified investment group, and was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2022. He comes from a family with roots in the mining industry, having been a major shareholder in one of Indonesia's largest coal mines and Southeast Asia’s largest coking coal asset. However since 2015, he has adopted an impact-driven approach and divested from the sector.

One of the group’s core businesses is BSA Land, Indonesia’s largest property developer for the middle-class market. The company shifted from high-end developments to serving middle-income families and today leads in the private sector to ease Indonesia's 13 million housing backlog. With 30 projects nationwide, the company has delivered over 20,000 residential and commercial units, while invigorating nearly 10,000 SMEs through its cost-efficient commercial developments.

Steve is also the Co-Founder/ Chairman of SM Group, a company shaping Indonesia’s mobility landscape. The group operates one of the country’s largest electric vehicle (EV) dealerships in partnership with companies such as Chery Group and Geely, a global automotive conglomerate with significant stakes in renowned brands such as Volvo, Aston Martin, and Mercedes Benz. SM Group also serves as the distributor for QJ Motor, China’s largest premium motorcycle manufacturer and the parent company of historic Italian brand Benelli.

He further oversees a digital-infrastructure JV that develops enterprise-grade cybersecurity, advanced cloud architecture, and applied-AI systems for financial data and risk intelligence. The initiative leverages AI-driven analytics built on deep data-science capabilities and is supported through strategic partnerships with global technology leaders such as Wiz, the US$32B Alphabet-backed cybersecurity company.

Steve was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2022. He is a member of YPO (Young Presidents' Organization) and appointed as the Chief Representative for the Indian Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia. He holds an MBA from Duke University, a BCom in Finance from Macquarie University and completed the Global Leadership & Public Policy Program at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

Outside of work, Steve is an avid martial arts enthusiast. He founded Bali MMA, which was ranked among the Top 10 MMA Gyms in Asia by Fox Sports. The competition team is now widely regarded as one of the most competitive in Brazilian Jiujitsu, Mixed Martial Arts, and Kickboxing, boasting world champions and athletes from over a dozen countries.
