Formerly: with Stanford, helped start Bio-X, a multi-disciplinary initiative linking physical and biological sciences with engineering and medicine; Bell Laboratories. Currently, also Professor of Physics, Molecular and Cellular Biology, University of California, Berkeley; research includes tests of fundamental physics, development of methods to laser cool and trap atoms, polymer physics, single molecule biology. Co-Chair, Transitioning to Sustainable Energy, an international IAC study. Member of the Board: Hewlett Foundation; University of Rochester; NVIDIA; Scientific Board, Moore Foundation. Member: National Academy of Sciences; American Philosophical Society; Academy of Arts and Sciences; Academia Sinica. Foreign Member: Chinese Academy of Sciences; Korean Academy of Science and Engineering. Former Member: Advisory Committee to Directors of NIH; National Nuclear Security Agency; Executive Committee, NAS Board on Physics and Astronomy. Eight honorary degrees. Recipient of numerous awards including Nobel Prize in Physics (1997).
