Tasman Bain

Tasman Bain is an analyst, advocate, humanitarian and Co-Founder of Meri Toksave (a youth-led charity for the prevention of gender-based violence in Papua New Guinea). He has 10 years of experience in government and NGOs, from the street-level of criminal justice to the boardroom of humanitarian governance to the area of multilateral policy.

In recognition of his leadership and contribution to humanitarian action, Tas is a recipient of the Youth Meritorious Service Award of the Australian Red Cross and was a Finalist for both the 2018 Queensland Young Achiever Award and the 2016 Queensland Young Australian of the Year Award. He has also been profiled by Young Australians in International Affairs, The Saturday Paper, and Feminist Foreign Policy.

Tas is a policy adviser in the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, providing advice and analysis on international gender equality, human rights, and sustainable development issues. He previously worked on victim services at the Queensland Department of Justice and Attorney-General, human rights and peacebuilding at the Australian Mission to the United Nations in New York, national security and counter-terrorism at the Attorney-General's Department, and Indigenous land (Native Title) at the Federal Court of Australia.

He is a Member of the ACT Board of the Australian Red Cross, having previously served on the Queensland Board and as Chair of the Queensland Youth Advisory Committee. He has also been a Member of the Queensland Government's Youth Engagement Panel, a consultant to the Queensland Council of Social Service, an advocate and researcher for the successful Queensland Human Rights Act Campaign, and a Senior Facilitator with UN Youth Australia.

In July 2020, Tas graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with an Extended Major in Anthropology (with a focus on legal and political anthropology) from The University of Queensland where he received letters of commendation from the Head of the School of Social Science.

An avid debater, Tas was elected a Life Member of the UQ Debating Society, won the Queensland Universities Debating Cup, and has been the Chief Judge of the Queensland British Parliamentary Debating Championship, the Convenor of the Australasian Debating Championship, and the Head Coach of Debating at Somerville House.
