Tokyo-based columnist and TV commentator for Nikkei, covering the Asia-Pacific region and various global issues, including international trade and investment, financial and monetary affairs, migration and climate change. Interviews political and business leaders and appears as a host on Japanese news TV programme “Nikkei Plus Ten” and “Future Century ZIPANG”. More than 30 years of journalism experience; has spent more than half of career as foreign correspondent in Washington DC and Frankfurt, Germany, covering major business and financial events, including the Asian Economic Crisis, the US-Japan trade dispute and European economic integration. In Tokyo, has worked as an editorial writer and columnist for ten years. Japanese writings appear in Nikkei’s “Spring & Autumn” column; writes for news column “Tea Leaves” and "Business Insight", Nikkei Asian Review, Nikkei's English publication. Currently on assignment in Singapore. Recipient, Vaughn-Uyeda Memorial International Journalistic Prize, an annual award for journalists who have made exceptional international news report. Degree in Physical Chemistry, Hokkaido University, Japan; Knight journalism course, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), US.
