Earth Guardians

Earth Guardians is a community-driven initiative by the Global Shapers Muscat Hub, supported by The Climate Reality Project. It aims to promote sustainable living through informative workshops and innovative competitions that integrate a 'theory to action' approach in collaboration with local partners. By advocating for sustainability and inspiring local youth to take proactive steps, we aim to cultivate a climate-conscious generation, encourage healthier lifestyles, and contribute to a greener planet. Our efforts are aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and Oman’s Vision 2040.

FIRST EDITION: APRIL - JUNE 2024

In its inaugural edition, Earth Guardians focused on raising awareness about high pesticide use and increasing waste in Muscat.

Workshop: Partnering with YUZU Agriculture, a 100% local organic farm, and Be’ah, the national waste management company, we conducted workshops on organic farming, healthy eating and waste management, reaching over 500 students and parents.

Competition: The program culminated in an interschool sustainable scarecrow-making competition, encouraging students to upcycle waste materials into creative scarecrows, integrating art and science and climate-themed stories, to tackle pest problems on YUZU farms. The competition saw participation from 50 students presenting 12 scarecrows.

Award Ceremony: The final award event was attended by 130 participants, including students, parents, and teachers. It showcased the creativity and dedication of young environmental champions, celebrating the competition outcomes and promoting a circular approach to sustainability.

LONG TERM VISION

Our long-term vision is to establish an annual national program that expands awareness of sustainable practices across Oman. By doing so, we aim to instill a sense of environmental responsibility and nurture the interest of younger generations in environmental studies and research. We look forward to hosting more editions tackling different issues in the future.
