Global City Density Project: Tackling the Climate Crisis

Problem Statement

Climate change is impacting hundreds of millions of people each year and its impacts are only worsening. Cities are growing and represent a sustainable solution to reducing the impact of climate change, but in many cities infrastructure is not developed in a way to ensure sufficient density and contributes to the problem of climate change. 

Target Group

Government stakeholder, policymakers, nonprofit and community stakeholders. 

Proposed Solution

Develop the criterias for a global cities and the standard for our global cities of different tiers. This is an effort to establish a Global City Density Standard could change and lead the conversation on the future of cities, especially global cities like New York City & other megacities where Global Shaper Hubs are located.

Activities

• Establish criterias for a global city (October-November)


• Establish standards that impact density growth (October - December)


• Identify key government, nonprofit and private sector stakeholders (November - December)


• Interview stakeholders (January-February)


• Assess NYC based on these criterias (February - March)


• Expand and evaluate other global cities (March - May)


• Review and establish recommendations to expand density (May - June)

Short & Long-term Goals/Results

The establishment of a evaluation score for NYC and potentially other cities that are similar to NYC. Recommendations to help improve NYC’s density and environmental sustainability. 

The creation of a score system, criterias, and recommendations will help foster conversation and competition among government stakeholders, nonprofit entities to implement improved global best practices to improve density development.

Available Metrics

• Enactment of density growth recommendations, and the measurement of density or density indicators year over year. Long term success means government regulatory change, which will likely happen over years.


• Establishment of evaluation score, and criterias, number of government, nonprofit and private sector stakeholders engaged.
